3 Steps to Permanently Erase Your Samsung Galaxy S6. Protect Your Data before You Sell

It takes more than a factory reset to permanently wipe personal data from your Galaxy S6. Here's how to do it in three steps.

You know how important it is to reset your Samsung Galaxy S6 to factory settings before you sell it, but did you know the standard factory reset doesn't actually delete all your data? Instead, it "hides" your data from Android, then overwrites it as the new owner loads their own information onto the device. That means anyone with Android recovery software could access your data and wreak havoc on your finances and privacy. Fortunately, there's an easy way to permanently erase your Galaxy S6 and ensure your data is wiped clean.

STEP 1: Encrypt your data

Encrypting your data makes it impossible to access without a password, which the future owner of your Galaxy S6 won't have. Start by setting a secure password (limited to 16 characters on Android). Norton Identity Safe is a free service you can use to generate a random, secure password that's difficult to guess.

Set your password:
  • Browse to SETTINGS > SECURITY > SCREEN LOCK
  • Choose PASSWORD
  • Enter your password

Next, encrypt your Galaxy S6:
  • Browse to SETTINGS > SECURITY > ENCRYPT PHONE
  • Select ENCRYPT PHONE
  • Confirm your selection

Now that your data is encrypted, even if someone were to find it they would not be able to read it.

STEP 2: Reset your Galaxy S6

With your data securely encrypted, you can now perform a factory reset.
  • Browse to SETTINGS > BACKUP & RESET > FACTORY DATA RESET
  • Select RESET PHONE and your Galaxy S6 will reset to factory settings

STEP 3: Overwrite old data (optional)

This optional third step will guarantee your data is completely wiped from your Galaxy S6. All you have to do is fill your device's hard drive with "junk" data - that is, data that isn't personal in any way - and it will overwrite the encrypted files you made. Doing so manually is a tedious process, so we recommend using one of the following apps to do it for you:

Finally, factory reset your Galaxy S6 one more time. Now, it's ready to sell - completely clean and free of any personal data. Don't forget to compare the highest-paying Galaxy S6 buyback offers on Flipsy.com!
