Which PlayStation Do You Have? How to Identify Your PlayStation
The easiest way to tell which Sony PlayStation you have is to check the model number. You can find it on the outside of the chassis, typically on the bottom, back or near the base.
Next, cross reference the model number in the tables below.
Note that Sony releases multiple variations of each PlayStation model, each with a slightly different model number. PS4 and PS5 model numbers are comprised of:
- 3-letter prefix: Product type (for example, the prefix “CUH” denotes a PS4)
- 2-digit series number: Series (for example, “20” denotes a PS4 Slim)
- 2-digit region number: Region (for example, “01” denotes United States)
- 1-letter capacity/version number: Hard drive capacity (for example, “A” denotes 500GB capacity for the PS4) OR, in the case of the PS5, whether it has a disc drive
For example, the model number CUH-2001A tells us we have a PlayStation 4 Slim made for the U.S. region with 500GB hard drive capacity.
In general, you don’t need the region number, so it’s represented by “xx” in the model numbers below.
PS5
Released in 2020, the PlayStation 5 is available in two editions, one with a disc drive (CFI-10xxA) and one without (Digital Edition, CFI-10xxB).

In 2021, Sony released an updated version that’s nearly identical except for a smaller cooling element, which reduces the console’s weight by around 300 grams. The updated version’s model numbers are CFI-11xxA (with disc drive) and CFI-11xxB (without disc drive).
Model Number | Model Name | Capacity | Release Date |
CFI-11xxA | PS5 Console | 825GB | 2021 |
CFI-11xxB | PS5 Digital Edition | 825GB | 2021 |
CFI-10xxA | PS5 Console | 825GB | 2020 |
CFI-10xxB | PS5 Digital Edition | 825GB | 2020 |
PS4
A quick and easy way to tell which PS4 you have is to examine the chassis:
- The original PS4 chassis has two tiers of equal height
- The PS4 Slim chassis likewise has two tiers, but the upper tier is shorter than the bottom tier
- The PS4 Pro chassis has three tiers

PS3
PS3 model numbers have a four-digit prefix, “CECH.” Otherwise, both the PS3 Slim and PS3 Super Slim follow the same naming conventions as the PS4 and PS5.
Original “fat” PS3 model numbers differ in that they have a fifth letter that denotes capacity and they omit the series number.

Otherwise, you can tell the models apart by their chassis:
- The original PS3 has a glossy, curved chassis printed with “PlayStation 3”
- The PS3 Slim has a matte finish with “PS3” engraved on the chassis
- The PS3 Super Slim has a matte finish with “PS3” engraved, but also features engraved lines and a sliding disc cover
Reference the model number to determine capacity.

PS2
Since the PS2 relies on memory cards (or an expansion hard drive), you probably don’t need to know the internal hard drive capacity to sell or repair the console. All you need to know is which edition you have: the original “fat” PS2, released in 2000, or the PS2 Slim, released in 2004. You can distinguish them by appearance or model number.
The original PS2 is thicker and features 6 ridges on the side. The PS2 Slim is accordingly slimmer with only 3 ridges.

PS2 model numbers begin with the prefix “SCPH.” The next four digits represent the model, and the last digit (“x” below) represents the country code.

PS1 (Original PlayStation)
Released in Japan in 1994 and in the U.S. in 1995, original PlayStation model numbers are similar to PS2 model numbers in that they begin with the “SCPH” prefix, but they differ in that they do not have a country code.

Most PS1 consoles are gray, though Sony made one version in white and some specialty versions in blue, green and black (these models all begin with the prefix “DTL”).

PS One
In 2000, Sony released a handheld PlayStation called the PS One. It’s easy to identify because it’s the only portable PlayStation that features a video screen. Its model numbers are:
- SCPH-100
- SCPH-101
- SCPH-102
- SCPH-103
