Video game controller price factors

Most modern gaming controllers are worth between $1 and $30, with $15 a rough average. Pricing primarily depends on condition; for example, a used Xbox One controller in good condition is worth $14 to $21, but a brand-new in the box controller is worth twice as much at $42 to $45. Broken controllers are worth considerably less.

Special edition and uniquely colored controllers tend to be more valuable than their standard counterparts. For example, a used Nintendo Switch Wireless Game Cube Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Gold controller can sell for $40. A limited edition PS4 DualShock 4 Alpine Green controller can command up to $65 new in the box, while a used Xbox One Dawn Shadow controller can be worth between $35 and $65.

Pro gaming controllers can be even more valuable; for example, a Scuf Vantage for PS4 can sell for up to $114 while an Astro C40 TR for PS4 and PC can be worth around $160.

Retro gaming controllers can have excellent value. Though many original Nintendo, PS2, Sega and Atari controllers are worth less than $10, some special edition controllers like the Nintendo R.O.B. can be worth hundreds of dollars.

The best way to see how much your gaming controllers are worth is to search eBay, then filter by sold listings to see what the marketing is currently paying for them. Compare apples-to-apples to get accurate pricing: the same model, color, platform and condition.

Where to sell gaming controllers

You can sell video game controllers to online buyback stores like eStarland, Cash For Gamers and Amazon Trade-In. Buyback stores offer quick, convenient sales and free shipping.

Local selling options include video game retailers like GameStop and classifieds like Craigslist and Facebook Marketplace. Local retailers won’t pay as much as private buyers, but they offer instant sales. Private buyers will pay the most money, but there’s no guarantee of sale and you’ll likely need to meet the buyer in person.

eBay is a good option, especially if you have a special or limited-edition controller. The site is frequented by collectors and the auction format can drive the price up; however, you’ll likely face competition and sales are not guaranteed. If your controller sells, you’ll need to pay a commission plus PayPal fees.

Consider which selling experience sounds the most appealing. If you want a quick and convenient sale, online buy back stores are the way to go. If you need fast cash today, opt for a local retailer. Willing to hold out for more money? Try local classifieds ads. If you want to see if you can get a higher price via auction – and you’re OK paying fees – you can give eBay a try.
