Not sure how to tell which iPhone you have? Here’s how to find your iPhone model, capacity and carrier
Not sure which iPhone you have? You’ll need to know its model, capacity and/or carrier if you want to sell it, get a screen protector or case, send it in for repair or buy parts. Here’s how to determine what iPhone you have.
Model
There are two ways to find the model of your iPhone: on the device or via the settings menu.
On your iPhone
- If you have an iPhone 8 or newer, your model number will be located on the SIM card tray
- If you have an iPhone 7 or earlier, it will be located toward the bottom of the back case
Settings menu
- Browse to SETTINGS > GENERAL > ABOUT
- Some iOS versions display the model name, which might be all you need to know (for example, iPhone 11)
- The part number will be listed to the right of Model Number. Tap it to display the model number
- Reference the model number on the table below to identify your iPhone

Capacity
Some iPhone models list the storage capacity on the back case, which is the easiest way to find it. If your iPhone does not, you can still find it via the settings menu.
- Browse to SETTINGS > GENERAL > ABOUT
- Scroll down to CAPACITY
Alternatively, you can view the total capacity and available capacity:
- Browse to SETTINGS > GENERAL > [DEVICE] STORAGE
- Look toward the top right to find the available and total capacity (for example, 56 GB of 512 GB Used)
Depending on your iOS version, the stated capacity might not perfectly match the total capacity of your iPhone. That’s because the operating system consumes hard drive space. If that’s the case, use this chart to determine the total capacity.
Stated capacity | Total capacity |
Less than 8GB | 8GB |
Greater than 8GB but less than 16GB | 16GB |
Greater than 16GB but less than 32GB | 32GB |
Greater than 32GB but less than 64GB | 64GB |
Greater than 64GB but less than 128GB | 128GB |
Greater than 128GB but less than 256GB | 256GB |
Greater than 256GB but less than 512GB | 512GB |

Carrier
You can identify your iPhone carrier from the settings menu.
- Browse to SETTINGS > GENERAL > ABOUT
- Find your carrier listed under Network and/or Carrier
If you can’t turn your iPhone on, your carrier name or logo might also be imprinted on the SIM card.
