Used VR headset prices depend on several factors, including capabilities, accessories, platform/games and condition. For in-demand VR headsets like the Oculus Rift CV1 and HTC Vive, you can generally expect to get anywhere between 20% and 50% of the original MSRP.

Capabilities and platform/games

High-end VR headsets like the Microsoft HoloLens (PC) and Magic Leap (onboard computer) blend digital worlds with the physical world. Termed “mixed reality” by Microsoft and “spatial computing” by Magic Leap, these technologies carry hefty price tags: both devices can be worth more than $395 used, despite limited gaming content.

Mid-range headsets like the HTC Vive and Oculus Rift feature large gaming libraries, 110-degree fields of view and room-scale tracking, making them both valuable and in high-demand. The Vive offers more than 2,000 titles on the Steam platform, while the Oculus Rift boasts hundreds of games and runs on PC. You can expect to get $60 to $225 for VR headsets in this range.

The PlayStation VR features a 100-degree field of view and works with around 200 PS4 games. That’s less than the Rift and Vive, but the popularity of the PS4 makes the PS VR worth between $40 and $310.

The Samsung Gear VR can only be used with late-model Galaxy phones (they slip into the device). Considered an entry-level VR headset, it sells for $3 to $15, on average – though some go for between $2 and $23 on eBay (before fees).

Accessories

Expect to get around 20% to 50% more if you have VR headset accessories like controllers and sensors.
