Here are five ways to tell which MacBook model you have.
1. About This Mac
This is the simplest way to learn more about your Mac.
- Click the Apple icon in the corner of your screen
- Select “About This Mac”
About This Mac will display identifying information about your MacBook, including:
- Model name, display size and release date
- Processor
- RAM (memory)
- Hard drive capacity
- Graphics card
- Serial number

2. System Information
The System Information app offers detailed insights about your MacBook. There are four ways to access it:
- Open About This Mac and click “System Report”
- Hold the Option key and select the Apple icon in the corner of your screen, then select “System Information”
- Use the Spotlight app to search for System Information
- Open System Information from Applications > Utilities
System Information will display configuration details like:
- Model name and identifier
- Processor name, speed and cores
- RAM (memory)
- Hard drive capacity
- Serial number
- Hardware specs for audio, Bluetooth, camera, ethernet cards, etc.
- Network information

3. Serial number
If your MacBook doesn’t power on, you can still identify it by serial number. You can find it printed:
- On the bottom of your MacBook
- On the original packaging
- On the original receipt or invoice
- In your Apple ID account (if your MacBook is registered)
Once you have the serial number, use another device to enter it on Apple’s Check Coverage page to see which MacBook model you have.

4. Apple ID
If your MacBook is registered with Apple, you can log in to your Apple ID account and select “Devices” to view its model name and serial number.

5. Part or model number
This method takes a little more work and probably isn’t necessary if you have your serial number, but it’s still a way to tell which MacBook you have. Look on the bottom of your device or the original packaging to see if it displays a part number or model number.
If you have a part number, you can cross-reference it on Apple’s own MacBook identification pages to see which model you have:
If you have a model or part (order) number, you can use a resource like EveryMac to find the corresponding model name and additional specs like RAM, storage capacity and processor:
Note that model numbers often correspond to multiple MacBooks, so you’ll get more information about specific configurations if you research the part number.
Here are some example MacBook, MacBook Pro and MacBook Air part and model numbers.
